To complement the GreenLight Programme, and to promote the use of energy-efficient lighting also in the residential sector, the European Commission has established in 1999 the European Design Competition "Lights of the Future". This competition is held every second year (2000, 2002) and it has been established as one of the key awards for professional designers, design students, and luminaires manufacturers. As from 2004 the competition is  organised by Messe Frankfurt GmbH.
