Product description

The initial brief for re-light was to design an independent light source for rural communities in developing countries in order to replace oil-lamps and candles which start fires that kill or maimed thousands of people each year.

Re-light is a solar powered, rechargeable light source using white light LEDs for illumination. All the components (solar panel, LEDs, batteries, tilt switch) are completely incased in clear epoxy resin to make the product very durable and safe to use. Re-light has no moving parts such as switches or buttons as these would pose the risk of water or dust entering the lamp thereby causing malfunctions or failures. The light is activated by a tilt switch: when the solar panel side of the object faces upwards, the light is off and charging; turning the light into any of its working positions will switch it on automatically. The product is designed to provide 10 hours of light from one charge and has a life-span of 4 years, thereby replacing up to 4000 candles.

A frame at the back of the light gives re-light a second life even after it has stopped working as light source. This frame is capable of holding instructions, when the light is handed out first time, and can serve as a photo-frame later on; photographs being very highly valued in many cultures, frames are always sought after.
