The healthcare company Johnson & Johnson received the 2002 European GreenLight Partner Award from European Commission officer Paolo Bertoldi. The Award Ceremony took place in May 2002, in Nice, during the joint international conference dedicated to Improving Electricity Efficiency in Commercial Buildings (IEECB 2002) and Energy-Efficient Lighting (Right Light 5). The GreenLight Partner Award recognises and promotes the companies that have made an outstanding contribution towards the goals of the programme.

Johnson & Johnson obtained the prize for its real commitment to adopting energy-efficient lighting measures. It was the first organisation to join the European GreenLight programme in 2000.

In their Janssen Pharmaceutica facility in Belgium they have performed a relighting study for 75% of their 410 000 m² workspace. The actual relighted surface amounts 62 000 m². All new facilities are equipped with daylight- and occupancy-sensors, 26mm diameter fluorescent tubes with high efficiency ballasts and reflectors. In addition to less cooling needs, lower maintenance costs and better working conditions for employees, they reported 1 240 000 kWh/year savings which represents a 40% reduction of electricity use in the areas covered and 62 000 Euro/year energy cost savings.

J&J Corporate Energy Director Harry Kauffman commented: "We see the European GreenLight Programme as increasing the awareness within our companies in Europe and providing technical information and tools to accelerate our lighting upgrades"

The European Commission also awarded the 2002 GreenLight Endorser awards to ETAP and INRES for the large number of companies they enrolled and assisted in the GreenLight programme in 2001.

Five new Partners joined GreenLight in August and September 2002: Citigroup (in UK), City of Sassari (Italy), Ayuntamiento de Macastre (Spain), Piraeus Bank (Greece), Ministry of justice (France).

"Our company is strongly committed to helping preserve the environment for future generations and we are pleased to participate in EU GreenLight which will help us strengthen this commitment," said Iris Gold, Vice President of Environmental Affairs at Citigroup.

"On an ongoing basis, we review and evaluate the infrastructure in our facilities and explore possibilities that will enable us to further benefit the environment," said John Killey of Citigroup’s Corporate Realty Services in London. "We are pleased to have been made aware of EU GreenLight, which promises to be both cost-effective and will contribute towards bettering the environment."

GreenLight Partner Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) has reduced lighting energy use in three airports so far. Total savings exceed 1.5 million kWh/year. Additional airports are now being considered.

In Barajas airport (Madrid), AENA corrected the over-lighting situation by installing flux dimmers on the first and ground floors. Lighting levels were reduced down to recommended levels. As a result, electricity use for lighting was cut by 40%.

Key data:
Total upgraded floor area: 30 000 m2
Electricity reduction: 1 135 296 kWh/year
Energy cost savings: 47 492 Euro/year
Payback time: 3.2 years

Other upgrades were performed in Tenerife and La Palma. The next airports to be upgraded will be those of Palma de Mallorca and Almeria.

Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) is a public entity in charge of the administration, maintenance and  development  of the airports and Spanish control centres. AENA manages an integrated net of 42 airports.

In Norway, by simply tuning up their lighting bus system, GreenLight Partner SAS reduced its lighting energy use by ca. 30%. The investment will pay off within 5 months.

In 1998, after their EIB bus system had been installed, no real commissioning was performed. While joining the GreenLight programme, SAS Norway undertook a survey of their building and exterior spaces. They hired a consultant to propose actions and calculate the energy savings. They realised that, by simply tuning up the existing bus system, they would reduce lighting operating time and save 30% of their lighting electricity use. They managed to do it themselves and since the building has separate measurements on each of the electrical distribution systems' main risers, it was easy for them to measure the electricity consumption before and after the bus system was optimised.

The result shows the importance of commissioning properly the lighting control systems. It shows also that it doesn't need a lot of money to achieve significant savings. In the present case, the total investment was 0.30 Euro/m2. It was reimbursed within 5 months. SAS is keen on repeating this successful experience in other buildings.

Key data:
Total upgraded floor area: 49 210 m2
Electricity reduction: 813 280 kWh/year
Energy cost savings: 39 200 Euro/year
Payback time: 0.4 years

GreenLight will be explained to electricians during seminars organised in 9 localities across the Czech Republic.

During these seminars, lighting professionals give lectures on various energy-efficient lighting topics, including GreenLight. The attendance is composed of about 30-50 electricians, light- and wire-installing companies and designers.

These seminars are sponsored by the IFC/GEF Efficient Lighting Initiative and the Moravian Electro-engineering Union.

The seminars cover the entire Czech Republic. Nine localities have been chosen:
